The hypnotic Knives and Skin follows the investigation of a young girl’s disappearance, led by an inexperienced local sheriff, in a stylized version of a rural Midwest town that hovers just above reality. Unusual coping techniques develop among the traumatized residents with each new secret revealed. The ripple of fear and suspicion within the community destroys some relationships…and strengthens others. The backdrop of despair colors the quintessential rituals of small-town life—courtship, dances, football games—in which the local teenagers experience an accelerated loss of innocence, while their parents are forced to confront their failures. Writer/Director Jennifer Reeder’s mystical modern noir presents coming-of-age as a lifelong process, and examines the profound, unending impact of grief.
